Roman Signer

'I simply think with material the same way that a poet takes words and turns them into sentences,' says veteran Swiss artist Roman Signer of his work. His practice takes the form of humorous experiments that harness the laws of physics to creative ends. In his current show at the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh this 'emotional physicist' shows some beautiful kinetic sculptures including a ring of desk fans endlessly propelling a red plastic bag around in a circle. Alongside these are film documentation from his long career, including footage of the artist sitting on an office chair in the forest slowly being spun round by the rockets attached to his wrists. I'm looking forward to seeing what he shows in London this week.
